Now that the tips page is getting longer, should I take initiative and alphabetize them by subject?

I have a question about R - but this is also a bit of an experiment on the vigilance of the "QERM-wiki" recent changes watchers. The question is: What font does R use as it's default? And how is it best matched by other figures (for an article, say) made with Excel or with ArcGIS? Best, Eli 00:03, 16 January 2009 (PST)

Eli, more specific? I'm pretty sure the font that is used in the plots is Arial. If you make your plot look crappy it might be best matched with Excel and ArcGIS. Tommy 11:17, 16 January 2009 (PST)
OK, so if you make a PDF from R using a command like: pdf('font_test.pdf'); plot(1,pch='R',cex=10);

and then within Acrobat Reader go to File > Properties > Fonts, you can see that indeed, Arial MT is the font used. Interestingly, using R in linux, the default font is Helvetica for standard plots, but when you write to PDF, they come out Arial and match the results from Windows. If all else fails, you could use Inkscape to standardize fonts between plots created from multiple applications.
